With over 3,000 kms between Perth and Kununurra, it would be hard for employees of the ANZ bank, located in Perth, to envision what it is like to live in the harsh, hot conditions of the East Kimberley. However, when approached by Save the Children to provide funding to purchase a 10 seater, 4 wheel drive vehicle for their Youth At Risk Project in Kununura, the employees of the ANZ bank were happy to respond.
The Shell funded, Kununurra Youth At Risk Project works with young people from indigenous communities. The project aims to increase young people’s ability to make positive choices about their lives through a range of challenging and educational activities which simultaneously establish pathways for them to access education or employment opportunities.
The vehicle is vital to enabling Save the Children to transport young people to and from remote communities in and around Kununurra. This allows us to access and engage the most isolated members of the communities, and transport them between programme activities, including bush trips and a range of cultural, workplace awareness and recreational programmes.
With Save the Children having raised $50,000 of the $80,000 required to purchase, maintain and run the vehicle, the ANZ Staff Foundation have made the purchase possible by funding the $30,000 deficit. The ANZ bank provides a workplace giving scheme in which employees can donate regularly to charity through their payroll scheme.
Our thanks must go to the ANZ Staff Foundation for enabling this essential purchase. This donation provides an integral element to the success of the Kununurra Youth At Risk project.
