Focus

Save the Children Australia Program Focus

Save the Children Australia is primarily a development agency, but will get involved in disaster assistance and advocacy where we believe it can make a difference in contributing to the rights of children at risk.

Development programs

We directly implement development programs, generally working in partnership with local organisations or governments. Priority is given to countries where children are particularly disadvantaged in Asia, and neighbouring South Pacific nations.

Emergency Assistance

In the case of an emergency situation, we may deliver emergency relief in countries where it already supports development work. To respond to emergencies in other countries, we may support work through The International Save the Children Alliance emergency response network, or other appropriate organisations.

Advocacy

We are an apolitical organisation that will speak out on behalf of children when specific government policies or actions endanger the rights of the child. The basis of our advocacy is the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Geographical Focus

We focus our work in a number of Asian and Pacific countries operating through in-country offices. This ensures the development of in-depth analysis of local needs, and strong partner relationships are formed. We have had program offices in Bangladesh, Cambodia, Laos, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu for the past 10-15 years. In addition, we now support projects in Vietnam and Papua New Guinea.

In the Pacific, we are a key Alliance agency in the region, and have an important role in maintaining a focus on the needs of children at both a practical and policy level in Vanuatu and Solomon Islands. In Papua New Guinea, we work in partnership with Save the Children New Zealand.

In Asia, we are one of various International Save the Children Alliance agencies operating in Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos and Bangladesh. The needs of children are enormous in these countries, and each Alliance organisation works in its' area of specialisation. We are contributing to the 'common framework of operation' being developed by the Alliance for each country.

New country programs

We will consider new programs where there is demonstrated need, resources available, and that the new program focus is supported by the Alliance partnership.

Our domestic programs

We work overseas and in Australia. Our domestic program includes operational projects at a state level using locally obtained grant funding and national programs operating in a number of states.
