Breakfast is widely acknowledged as the most important meal of the day, however more than 40% of Australian children go to school without a proper breakfast. The resultant hunger and poor nutrition make it very difficult for children to participate fully at school. These problems can result in truancy, aggressive behaviour, and sometimes students dropping out of school altogether.
Besides the alleviation of hunger and improved nutrition, our health, nutrition and lifeskills programs also result in better participation in class, better social integration, reduction in truancy rates and increased self esteem through positive and supportive social experiences.
We currently operate 20 breakfast programs in Victorian schools and 35 breakfast, snack food or lunch programs in metropolitan and regional areas of South Australia. We also provide six cooking and lifeskills programs.
Foodbank SA with the support of Toll Freight has delivered food to 35 schools in metropolitan and regional areas. Toll Freight has delivered these programs for free and we thank them for their generosity.
In addition, Morialta Trust has provided funding to four schools in Ceduna to implement a cooking and nutrition program. Indigenous children and families choose a recipe, cook a meal, budget and purchase from nutritious food groups once a week for the year. This is organised by the school community and Indigenous support staff in each community.
