Our Work

Does Save the Children Australia have a child sponsorship program?

No. Our programs focus on communities rather than individuals. We consider this a more effective and efficient approach for developmental outcomes.

How does Save the Children Australia determine whether a project is effective?

Projects are continually monitored and evaluated to determine their impact and effectiveness. We do this through financial and project reporting, regular monitoring visits, program reflections and formal evaluations.

Does Save the Children Australia work with other organisations?

Whenever we start a project, campaign or emergency response, we consider what other organizations are doing so that our work will complement existing efforts. We work together when a collaborative approach will increase our effectiveness.

Can I visit my child representative and / or send them a gift?

While we appreciate that you would love to meet your child representative, we are unable to facilitate any program visits due to child protection and child rights policies. We hope the regular updates from your child representative goes some way to helping you learn more about them, and the great benefits achieved from your kind support.

We also do not have the facilities and resources to send items from our donors to children and families overseas. This policy ensures that our administration costs are kept as low as possible, and that as much of our supporters' donations as possible go to the children and communities most in need.

How are programs funded?

Our programs are funded by income received from supporters, government funding and corporate sponsorships.

Where does my money go? What % of my funds go to the children?

where the money goes

Where the money goes

For every $1 we receive we spend

70 cents directly on our programs to save and protect children's lives.

8 cents is spent to manage our programs, advocate for change and promote our work.

3 cents is spent on managing our fantastic shops.

19 cents is invested in fundraising to raise the next $1 to help ensure every child has a safe and happy childhood.

During an emergency response we cover our own costs in a first phase response then we seek for cost recovery in the 2nd phase. 10% is taken off every emergency dollar as cost recovery, leaving a dedicated 90% to emergency needs as covered through our Children Emergency Fund (CEF). History

How did Save the Children begin its work?

The International Save the Children Fund was founded in 1919 by a British humanitarian, Eglantyne Jebb. Eglantyne was moved by the plight of children in Austria and Eastern Europe immediately following World War 1 and, ignoring the many angry views in Britain that she was helping "children of the enemy", Eglantyne began Save the Children's first relief scheme in Austria, supplying food to starving children. Can I donate clothes, food or other supplies to Save The Children during an emergency?

Save the Children does not accept donations of goods or items for overseas emergencies. What's needed most are financial donations so that we can purchase relief items locally. There are a number of reasons for this - purchasing relief items locally can help stimulate local economies affected by disaster. Secondly the costs of transporting goods-in-kinds to disaster-affected regions is prohibitively expensive and so the costs outweigh the benefit. Thirdly Save the Children will have pre-positioned emergency relief supplies, such as food and clothing, in the region ready to be distributed in time of disaster.

For emergency relief operations in Australia we may be able to accept goods and services that are relevant to the response. For further information regarding this please call us on 1 800 76 00 11 or send us a message.
