A month since the onset of the floods in Pakistan, 2.3 million children under the age of five have not been reached with critical and lifesaving assistance, according to Save the Children.

Save the Children Opens Child-Friendly Spaces to Give Thousands of Children A Place to Play, Recover and Learn
Thousands of children in Pakistan affected by historic flooding in Pakistan are receiving support to reinforce their ability to cope with disaster and protection from abuse and exploitation.
Save the Children has established 10 child-friendly spaces in Muzafargarh and four in Swat. Three mobile child-friendly spaces are also providing activities for children in DG Khan, Muzafargarh and Rajanpur. Lindsay Shearer, Save the Children’s child protection manager in Pakistan says, “These child-friendly spaces provide children affected by the floods with a comforting environment that helps them cope with the uncertainty around them, provides opportunities to learn and play, and give them time and space to just be children.”

With nearly 9 million children dying every year from preventable diseases before their fifth birthday, global CEO of Save the Children Jasmine Whitbread has called on world governments to take “immediate and decisive action” to turn around this tragic statistic, saying “although we face many challenges, it’s crucial we don’t give up on achieving the Millennium Development Goals by their 2015 deadline.”
Ms Whitbread’s comments come in the lead-up to the United Nations Department of Public Information/Non Governmental Organisation (DPI/NGO) Conference on global health, to be held next week in Melbourne from Monday 30 August to Wednesday 1 September, 2010. Jasmine Whitbread is a guest speaker at the event, which will focus on world health issues as they relate to the Millennium Development Goals.

Save the Children is moving quickly to mobilise supplies and personnel to begin providing emergency assistance to the families who have been affected by the unusually heavy monsoon rains in Pakistan, where to date, over 1300 people have died. The destruction is massive and devastating.
Save the Children has launched a fundraising appeal to assist affected children and their families. The Pakistan Flood Appeal number is 1800 76 00 11.
