The lives of thousands of pregnant women, new mothers and newborn babies are at risk in Haiti as the rainy season sets in, bringing with it the threat of floods, mudslides and deadly diseases.

Even before the earthquake hit in January, killing more than 200,000 people and leaving an estimated 1 million homeless, Haiti ranked among the most dangerous countries in the world to give birth, with one in every 44 women dying during labour or due to complications with a pregnancy.

The Kimberley’s only licensed remote community childcare centre has been saved from closure by a partnership with leading Australian children’s rights organisation Save the Children.

The Djarindjin Childcare Centre will relaunch today (11 March) as the Djarindjin Quality Early Childhood Learning Centre, thanks to major funding and additional staff resourcing from Save the Children.

Agency Plans to Set up Around 300 Temporary Classrooms Over Coming Weeks

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (March 5, 2010) — Classes have begun again for the children of Cejecodema School in Martissant, an area on the outskirts of Port-Au-Prince in Haiti, thanks to assistance from Save the Children. The humanitarian agency has provided classroom tents and supplies so that hundreds of children in this quake-affected area could reinitiate their studies and regain a sense of normalcy.
