Early learning for disadvantaged children

Save the Children runs Early Learning Centres in Victoria, Queensland and Western Australia to provide preschool education for children who would otherwise miss out.

One of longest running Australian programs, our Mooroopna and Nowa Nowa kindergartens in rural Victoria, have been open since the 1960s. Along with the more recent addition of the Family and Early Learning Centre in Djaindjin on the Dampier Peninsula in Western Australia and the Kirdi Mayarr Child Care Centre on Mornington Island in Northern Queensland, these centres provide affordable and accessible early learning opportunities for children.

Why early learning is important for children

Many children in Australia lack access to education. Some drop out of school or have poor attendance because they don’t have the basic learning foundation to continue their education journey.

Our Early Learning Centres

Located in socially and geographically isolated communities in Victoria, Queensland and Western Australia, we provide regular kindergarten and/or day care for children. Our Early Learning Centres focus on children from Aboriginal communities and promote growth and learning in the years before school - a critical part of Save the Children’s Early Childhood Care and Development programs in Australia.

Sessions are delivered by trained teachers and early childhood educators from local communities, who help prepare children for school through quality, educational and culturally appropriate activities. Family participation is also encouraged through regular events at the centres.

How we know we’re helping children learn

With our Mooroopna and Nowa Nowa kindergartens open for more than 50 years, we know we’re doing something right. In 2012, Mooroopna Kindergarten was a finalist in the Victorian Government’s Early Years Awards which recognise outstanding achievements in improving outcomes for children and families.

Who makes our Early Learning Centres possible

Save the Children is grateful for support from the Australian Department of Education, the Queensland Department of Education and Training through the Office for Early Childhood Education and Care and the Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, and the Djarandjin Aboriginal Corporation in Western Australia. We are also thankful to generous Australians who help us give disadvantaged children the best start to life.
