Inquiry into the Victorian Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act 2006

Save the Children supports the inclusion of children's rights and a remedy and enforcement mechanism in its submission to the review of the Victorian Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act 2006. We also encourage the creation of a child-friendly version of the Charter so that children and young people living in Victoria have the opportunity to know and understand their rights and responsibilities.

Queensland Floods Commission of Inquiry

Save the Children Australia provided a submission in response to the recent floods in Queensland.  We recommend that emergency planning in Queensland should include plans for the provision of Child Friendly Spaces (CFSs), psychosocial support for children suffering trauma after an emergency and adequate child protection measures in all evacuation and recovery centres.

Universal Periodic Review for Timor Leste

Save the Children Timor Leste and Plan Timor Leste, with support from Save the Children Australia, provided a joint submission to the upcoming Universal Periodic Review of Timor Leste in October 2011.  The submission focuses on a number of important issues affecting children's lives including their right to health, education and protection in Timor Leste.

Contribution to the CRC NGO Report

Save the Children Australia is on the Child Rights Taskforce, which is preparing an NGO Report to the United Nations (UN) Committee on the Rights of the Child.  The issues, ideas and recommendations that are included in the NGO Report will be considered by the UN Committee when it assesses Australia's performance under the CRC in early 2012.

Independant review of Aid Effectiveness

The Australian Government has established an independent panel to undertake a review on the future direction of Australia's aid program. Save the Children Australia has provided recommendations to improve the delivery, effectiveness and efficiency of the Australian aid program.

Save the Children Australia strongly supports the Australian Government's consideration and potential adoption of the third optional protocol and endorses the comments on the negotiation and content of the draft text as set out in the Joint NGO Submission on the Protocol from the NGO Group for the CRC.

Submission to the Draft Indigenous Economic Development Strategy

Save the Children Australia is keen to increase the percentage of its workforce which is Aboriginal and in particular to improve Aboriginal participation in programming and administrative roles. We would also like to be in a position to promote more Aboriginal staff into leadership and management positions.
