On 25 May 2009, Cyclone Aila swept across the south-western coastal belt of Bangladesh, killing almost 300 people. Winds of up to 90 kmph propelled tidal waves 13 ft high, breaking river embankments and dykes in several places, washing away the lives and livelihoods of people in the region.

Hundreds of thousands of people are stranded with no food, water and shelter after Cyclone Aila swept across West Bengal in India and Bangladesh.
- Cyclone Aila hit coastal areas of eastern India and south-west Bangladesh on 25 May
- Around 4.8 million Bangladeshis and more than 5 million Indians — at least half of them children — have been affected by Cyclone Aila
- The storm has destroyed crops, homes and livestock belonging to families in remote communities
- In Bangladesh, over 1,413km (785 miles) of coastal and river embankments, which protect villages against flooding, have been damaged, leaving communities vulnerable as annual monsoon rains will begin in the coming weeks.
- Many families have had to leave their homes to seek safety and assistance and have lost their possessions
- With freshwater sources polluted with salt water and many displaced families staying in dangerously polluted places lacking sanitation facilities, there is a real risk of a major health emergency.
What we’re doing Save the Children is providing clean, safe water through water treatment plants and repairing water pumps for communities without access to clean water. We've also set up safe places for children to play and learn. We're distributing household essentials such as soap and bedding to families who have lost all their possessions. And we're providing families with oral rehydration salts to treat children suffering from diarrhoea, one of the deadliest illnesses for young children.
In India, we’ve set up seven child-friendly spaces in and around Sandeshkhali, providing almost 1,500 children with a safe place to learn and play. We’re also working to ensure that thousands of children and breastfeeding mothers enjoy a healthy midday meal.
In Bangladesh, we've directly reached around 17,000 people with safe drinking water, food, child protection, emergency non-food items and other relief.
However, we need your help to reach many more children and their families.Save the Children has been working in Bangladesh since 1972 and implements disaster risk-reduction programs in addition to conducting emergency relief efforts around the world.
