Libya Crisis

More than one million children in western Libya are in serious danger as government forces clamp down on protesters and vie for control of key towns and cities - with as many as 700,000 children trapped in the capital Tripoli, too frightened or vulnerable to move.

All sides have a responsibility to ensure that civilians, especially children, are not harmed by the ongoing violence.

We are responding to the needs of children and their families

Save the Children's team on the Tunisia/Libya border is preparing to respond to immediate needs in Tunisia, and continues to be on standby for a rapid assessment in Libya itself as soon as the security situation permits access.

Libya
  • We're sending in a team to Benghazi as a priority
  • Our experts in education, child protection and food are heading into eastern Libya over the coming days
  • We have identified vulnerable children (orphans) and are developing a proposal to support their care
Tunisia border
  • We have started small-scale programming (cash for work) cleaning up areas around the camps
  • Increased numbers of women and children are now crossing Tunisia, so we are assessing needs to move into child protection and setting up child friendly spaces
  • We plan to distribute 700 hygiene kits to people forced to flee the violence at the Tunisian border
