  • A billion people lack access to a health worker including more than 40 million children.

  • 7.6 million children under five years old died in 2010 from preventable and treatable illnesses such as diarrhoea, pneumonia and malaria.

  • More than 40 million children under five have no access to essential health services.

  • The World Health Organization recommends a minimum of 2.3 doctors, nurses and midwives for every 1,000 people. According to this measure, 61 developing countries have a critical shortage in health workers. Explore our health worker map to learn about these countries. 

  • More than 3.5 million additional health workers are needed, including 1 million community health workers before 2015 in order to meet the health-related Millennium Development Goals.
