Sadiya lives with her parents, her two older sisters and grandmother in a two-roomed house. At home, she helps her mum a lot as her two older sisters Kubra and Maditu live away in another village during the week to attend secondary school. Lack of access to schools - particularly secondary schools - is a real challenge. Luckily, Sadiya is able to attend the local primary school nearby, which is being supported by Save the Children.

Sadiya loves her school in rural Ethiopia but it hasn't been easy for her to attend every day. Her mother was ill recently and unfortunately, there is still an expectation in many families here that children will miss school to help at home when necessary.

How we help children like Sadiya

By improving Sadiya's school, installing clean water points and training teachers to provide better lessons, Save the Children is slowly educating parents on the difference an education can make to their children's lives.

Sadiya tells us class attendances are steadily growing. Happily, Sadiya's mother is well again so Sadiya is back to studying hard: "I would like to become a good student and finish school," she tells us.

She is already involved in the school health club supported by Save the Children where children learn about health, nutrition and hygiene routines. She recently put these skills to good practice when her mother became ill and Sadiya made sure all the dishes where washed thoroughly so no one else got sick. She even participated in a play on Parent's Day where the club shared positive health messages with classmates and adults.
