Sokea watering a garden in rural LaosPoverty in Cambodia

Sokea lives with his family in a wooden house, on stilts, which has no electricity or running water. His village in rural Cambodia is very poor and many children are under - nourished.

This is not uncommon in Cambodia where one in three Cambodians lives on 50 cents a day, and children - who make up more than half of the country's population - endure many obstacles to their development. About a third of all Cambodian children do not complete primary education and one in 13 do not live to the age of five.

How we help children like Sokea

Save the Children Australia has been working to improve the lives of children in Cambodia since 1979; Children like Sokea. At 13 years old, Sokea's life is now very different to what it used to be. Eleven years ago Sokea's parents divorced and moved away to different provinces. As a result, he was left with his grandmother who used to beat him. It was a daily struggle for Sokea to receive adequate health care, clothing, food and quality education. And without support his future remained uncertain. Thankfully, through the generous support of donors, Save the Children have been working in Cambodia to offer children like Sokea a future and an opportunity to break the cycle of poverty.
