Viviane lives with her parents, older sister, two brothers and her cousin's family in North Kivu, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Like many in the village, they don't have access to electricity or running water.

As a child growing up in the North Kivu province, Viviane faces many challenges. Since the mid 1990s, the province has been the scene of conflict due to ethnic tension and land rights issues. The ongoing fighting has severe consequences for children and their families living in the Congo, leaving many without access to clean water, food, education and health services.

How we help children like Viviane

Save the Children's work in North Kivu focuses on improving children's access to education and health services. In Viviane's town, we've increased the number of classrooms in the local Save the Children supported school, so children like Viviane receive an education.

Thanks to Save the Children, health care in the town is now available for free. Viviane has received her vaccinations and is protected against diseases such as polio, diphtheria, tuberculosis and whooping cough. With one in every five children dying before their fifth birthday in the Congo, Save the Children's health care programs are vital for children in Viviane's village.
