Laos Cycle for Education 2011

Have a great start to the new year by joining us on a unique travel and volunteer experience!Children in a village in Lao PDR

Mixing your sense for adventure travel with philanthropy, our 2011 challenge will be cycling through South East Asia's beautiful countryside of Laos in March. The sense of achievement you feel once you complete this type of physical adventure is incredible. It is a fantastic way to see Laos as you cycle through the country, being on the ground and taking in all the sights and smells. This gives you a chance to meet the local people, who, once you have reached your destination, will be the beneficiaries of the amazing fundraising work that you have done.

At the end of the cycle challenge you will visit the Save the Children project that you are supporting and have the opportunity to make a hands-on difference by volunteering for two days painting a classroom.  View the 3-minute footage on our charity challenge to Nepal in 2009 and see the impact the trip has on participants.

You can make a difference... join us now to experience an incredible life-changing trip.

When are we heading to Laos?

Thursday 3rd March - Monday 14th March

What do we do there and how much does it cost?

Save the Children's Laos Cycle for Education 2011 gives you the opportunity to make a tangible contribution to an exciting new program which will help deliver a better future for ethnic children in Laos through education. Save the Children's project, Building Bridges to Educational Success, seeks to fulfil children's rights to pre-school and primary education, by ensuring that Lao children, particularly those marginalised by poverty, remoteness, ethnicity, gender, or disability, can access quality basic education, in an inclusive and protective environment.

During the journey participants will visit a village which is part of the project. Here you can witness one of our education programs firsthand as well as assisting to paint a classroom.
Laos has one of South East Asia's most pristine environments and intact cultures and is an incredible destination and this cycling adventure has it all: from temples to beautiful waterfalls, saffron robed monks, dramatic landscapes and fantastic cuisine, the memories will last forever. The total distance cycling is just over 400km.

Fundraising target: $6,500 (includes most travel costs such as flights and accommodation, as well as a donation towards the Building Bridges project)
Registration fee: $700
Trip duration: 12 days
Cycle duration: 7 days
Project visit: 2 days

Who can do it?

This trip involves a moderate level of fitness. The distances cycled each day range from 39km to 80km; however there are plenty of rest stops and participants can take it at their own pace. A support vehicle always travels behind the group.
