Regional network NBN attended the event, broadcasting coverage of the day on the evening news. Local radio SeaFM also ran promotions about the organisation leading up to the event. The Copacabana Surf Life Saving Club provided the perfect location for the day and proceedings commenced with Georgia Tacey, Dominic Bigras and Val Moffat from Save the Children providing a moving presentation on the plight of children from around the world. They talked about local community programs as Early childhood education, Youth at risk, Children and family support and Health and nutrition for Save The Children within Australia. They also spoke about the devastation caused by the tsunami to our pacific neighbours and How Save the Children Australia is contributing to overseas initiatives such as Survive to Five. A crowd of over 100 people enjoyed the festivities and guests were treated to a ‘his and her’ fashion parade with the latest trends from Moss & Spy, Myer & fascinators by Amelia Johnson on show. The crowd enjoyed the parade as champagne and wine donated by major sponsor Bird in Hand winery flowed freely. Canapés were provided by Partywise catering and included delicious morsels of scallops, duck and prawns and were served generously throughout the day. Desert was a gorgeous mini Pavlova and profiteroles. Sam Woods from Channel 7’s ‘How to look 10 years younger” and Vibrant Concepts advised the crowd on the hottest seasons trends and styling tips whilst hosting the fashion parade. An exciting live auction was conducted by Adrian Reed from McGraths Real Estate with amazing prizes on offer such as weekend getaways to the Blue Mountains and Port Stephens, Designer clothing, Designer jewellery, artwork and gift vouchers from local businesses all being auctioned to raise funds. Local musicians Cameron Knight from Pepa, Vanessa Jade and Kerju entertained guests throughout the day and Sea FM’s Browney MC’d the event. There was a silent auction conducted with the highest bidder securing the prizes at the close of the event. Over $35,000.00 worth of prizes were auctioned. An ecstatic Nicole Ruiz, Narelle Mackell-Wong and Simone Graziani the organisers of the event, described it as "absolutely mind blowing, overwhelming in the generosity of local business and the local community". "We just couldn’t believe how willing people were to donate. The day has come together in only 4 months. This is our first major event and we have pulled it together in record time. We couldn’t be happier with the result." The girls said. ‘Bookies’ circulated throughout the crowd collecting donations for sweepstakes with a percentage of all sales going towards the Charity. The festivities stopped only for the great race and the crowd watched as Shocking held off international raiders Crime Scene and Mourilyan.
The charity punters got into the spirit of things and splurged almost $1,000 on raffle tickets, sweepstakes and auctions on the day. One lucky punter won a weekend away at Port Stephens Cote De Azur luxury resort in Port Stephens paying only $2 for a raffle ticket. Everybody was a winner on the day, with many people walking away with auction items where they had paid only a third of their value. Guests received a ‘goodie bag’ containing Bulgari perfume, PPS hair products and a Christmas edition of Inside Out as well as information about Save the Children programmes Survive to Five and the New South Wales Programs. "We had a brilliant time and will definitely be back next year." A satisfied local resident said at the end of the day. - By Trudi Wassell Check out a guest’s blog about the day last year: The race that stops a nation
