Knit One Save One

Knitted Square Tally

Last squares and blankets accepted on Tuesday 31st August - so knit quick!

Too many children in the world die needlessly before their fifth birthday from conditions that are treatable and preventable like pneumonia, diarrhoea, malaria and measles.

This prompted Save the Children to launch their Knit One Save One campaign in October last year to help save some of the 8.8 million children who die annually before the age of 5.

Knit One Save One asked Australians to knit a 20cm x 20cm square to help contribute to a blanket that will be sent to Cambodia, Laos, India and parts of Australia where hypothermia is a serious issue for newborns, particularly those with a low birth weight.

The campaign has been an amazing success with the target of 80,000 squares (5,000 blankets) already been met well ahead of target.  Due to this overwhelming public response, Save the Children has set the date of Tuesday 31 August for knitters to hang up their needles on this successful campaign.

Meanwhile the call is going out to knitting groups or individuals in the Melbourne metropolitan area for support to turn the squares already received into full blankets of 16 squares (4 x 4 each way).

Should you know anyone that would be able to collect bags of knitted squares from our office in East Melbourne and sew them together, Save the Children, would love your help.

So far, support for sewing squares together has come from businesses (as a team building exercise), church and community groups as well as aged care facilities.

So if you know of anyone looking for some group activities for a worthwhile cause then please contact Save the Children on 1800 76 00 11 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it for further information.

Stay tuned for the next Save the Children knitting initiative – it won’t be far away!

Don’t forget to have fun...

We’re serious, we need 80,000 squares sewn or crocheted into full blankets.  Here are a few opportunities where you can help, while having a bit of fun!

  • Knit and Sip - Invite a group of friends for morning tea (or a glass of champagne) and before you know it, you’ll have made a blanket - or two!
  • Twit and Knit – tell all your crafty friends about Knit One Save One via twitter or Facebook and help spread the word (whilst knitting of course).
  • A Stitch In Time – wherever you can - on the train, in a tram, in the park or in the dark – every little stitch helps.
  • Tuesday Night Knitting Club – book clubs are so yesterday. PS you can make it any night.
  • Hang out with our online community at our Knit One Save One blog.
