NT Mobile Play Bus

Latest news

Congratulations to Millner Primary School and our Northern Territory team!

The school has a community partnership with a number of organisations to provide support for Indigenous children from remote communities, which was announced the 2011 NAB Schools First Northern Territory Impact Award winner. The $100,000 win acknowledges the collaboration - known as ERICUS (Educating Indigenous Children in Urban Settings) - between Millner Primary School and Save the Children, AFL NT, Corrugated Iron Youth Arts, Children's Development Team and Danila Dilba Health Services.

Program

Save the children runs many programs throughout Australia. Some specific programs running in Northern Territory are;
Mobile Play Scheme
and a school attendance program.

Through supported playgroups in community settings in Wadeye and the suburbs of Darwin, vulnerable and disadvantaged children are given opportunities to learn, grow and prepare for school.

In 2010, Playscheme directly reached 1008 children aged under 6, all from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Playscheme runs over four school terms, delivering up to ten sessions each week. The ‘playbus' provides children with toys, books, learning materials, music, activities, paint and crayons to encourage learning and creativity in the early years. Parents and caregivers are actively involved in the session, playing with their children and connecting with other parents in their community.

State manager

Nancy Sweeney

Nancy Sweeny

My occupation began with Save the Children Queensland in 2004 as a Family Support Worker with a team of 3 people, two play scheme staff and myself. I then began an amazing journey with Save the Children and have since gone from Family Support Worker to Team Leader, the Program Coordinator and now State Manager NT with a team of 26, I am proud to say that 98% of our staff are Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander.

My goal in life was to mentor and encourage our people to stand strong and that we can achieve whatever we set our sights on. Save the Children have encouraged me to take on all Indigenous Leadership courses over the past seven years.
