Our Youth Outreach Partnerships Project in the Solomon Islands is working to improve the livelihood opportunities of Solomon Islanders. The lack of formal and informal education and employment opportunities is one of the biggest issues affecting young people in the Solomon Islands - a disproportionately large segment of the population - in both urban and rural communities. Operating in 21 communities across six provinces, last year over 1,500 people were directly involved in the development of plans for income generating, life skills and community improvement activities. The Youth Outreach Partnership Project works with young people in their communities and focuses on three elements: sustainable livelihoods, healthy lifestyles and participation. The project uses a strengths based approach to build on the capacities, talents and resources that already exist in communities to support young people in taking their place as productive members of the community. Healthy lifestyles are encouraged through life skills training, peer education and sport. The project also works with young people, women and community leaders to promote participation of all sections of the community in decision making.
