Vanuatu - Condom Social Marketing Program |
|
Save the Children currently works in conjunction with Marie Stopes International Pacific (MSIP) to provide the Condom Social Marketing Program, funded by the Asian Development Bank.
The Program aims for young people to have ready access to male and female condoms and lubricant. The Program also aims for young people to have the knowledge and skills to use condoms correctly and consistently, in order to prevent the transmission of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). There is limited information about the true extent of HIV, STIs or unplanned teenage pregnancy in the Condom Social Marketing Program countries.
The available evidence shows that while many young people are aware of HIV they do not have access to condoms or the skills to practice safe sex. Free condoms are available in each country, but stocks run out regularly and retail condoms are expensive. Access to sexual and reproductive health knowledge, services and supplies (i.e. condoms) are complicated by religious and cultural taboos and gender issues.
