Penrith Retail Volunteer

Our Save the Children store at Penrith is currently in need of volunteers to assist as shop assistants, pricers and stock sorters.

Role Purpose

The role of Retail Volunteer is a vital position to ensure the smooth running of our op shops, raising invaluable funds to help Save the Children support children at home and overseas. Retail Volunteers help with all activities in the day-to-day running of a busy store. This includes sorting, pricing and displaying donated stock in-store and providing exceptional customer service to help increase sales.  

Key Areas of Accountability

Sales & Customer Service

  • Generate sales to achieve store budgets
  • Ensure stock is sold as per the ticketed price
  • Ensure all sales are accurately processed though the cash register and EFTPOS
  • Support and drive local promotional activities within the store
  • Provide high levels of customer service in line with Save the Children standards
  • Handle customer feedback when necessary and provide solutions where possible

Operations

  • Attend designated shifts as per the roster and notify Store Manager of absences
  • Maintain compliance with SCA policies and procedures
  • Maintain a high standard of personal presentation
  • Maintain confidentiality and privacy in matter relating to the store, customers, procedures and security
  • Adhere to and maximise store trading hours
  • Maintain visual merchandising and housekeeping standards in line with guidelines
  • Ensure store and back-of-house are kept neat, secure and orderly 
  • Ensure full understanding of and compliance with Save the Children policies and procedures

Stock Management

  • Process stock accurately as per stock management guide, ensuring all processes are followed and pricing aligns with state pricing guidelines

Financials

  • Ensure all sales are processed through the cash register
  • Ensure till is balanced at close of business
  • Ensure petty cash is utilised for authorised store purchases only and is reconciled as per finance procedures

Loss Prevention

  • Ensure cash is secured daily including immediate closure of cash register after use
  • Strictly adhere to security procedures when opening and closing the store
  • Maintain awareness of internal and external theft and take preventative actions

Health and safety requirements

  • Act in a safe manner always, including complying with all safety instructions and training given at the workplace
  • Participate in, and contribute to, health and safety awareness and improvements
  • Comply with emergency evacuation procedures
  • Report all incidents, injuries and potential hazards in a timely manner

Child protection and safeguarding requirements

  • Safeguard children’s rights and act in the best interests of children at all times

  • Maintain a child safe environment at the workplace
  • Demonstrate the highest standards of behaviour towards children in both your private and professional life
  • Not abuse the position of trust that comes with being a part of the Save the Children family
  • Always maintain a safe and positive relationship when working with children and young people 
  • Respond to any concerns for the safety or wellbeing of a child in a program in accordance with internal reporting processes
  • Comply with the Child Protection Code of Conduct when working with children and young people

Security and risk management requirements

  • Be aware of, and consider, the risks associated with your everyday work and apply appropriate mitigation measures
  • Undergo National and/or International Police Check

Person Specification

Essential knowledge or experience

  • Organised and reliable
  • Care with personal presentation
  • Ability to commit to regular weekly shifts
  • Ability to stand for a minimum of 4 hours

Desirable knowledge or experience

  • Retail experience
  • EFTPOS / Money handling experience
  • Customer service
  • Ability to work unsupervised

  • Nil

Training provided

  • EFTPOS / money handling 
  • Induction to Save the Children policies, processes and Code of Conduct
  • Store induction and sales training
