Make a career out of helping Australian children

Dispelling the Myths 

Every sector is surrounded by assumptions; and ours is no different. So here are five common myths, which we have dispelled. 

1.     You must have work experience within a not-for-profit (NFP)/non-government organisation (NGO) to work for Save the Children.

Myth! We value, in fact, we NEED people who have come from different backgrounds, have different skillsets and are at different stages in their career. Diversity brings a variety of insights and the opportunity to build on each other's strengths. We are always building and transforming – so you could be just the person we are looking for to help us do so! 

2.      Without formal qualifications, my chances to be selected for a job are minimal.

Not true. In many of our roles, local experience, great connections within communities and cultural knowledge are highly valued in our organisation. In addition, we offer roles at all levels. We hire you for who you are and what you know, and are committed to help you develop from there. We want you to reach your full potential. Save the Children provides a range of training and development opportunities to employees to ensure continuous capability building.

3.     Your leaders are not progressive and have been in the same roles for a long time.  

Nope! We have a young dynamic CEO, who joined us in 2013, and a diverse team of passionate male and female Executives. They are all united in their drive for high performance and innovation. We've recruited senior leaders from a variety of backgrounds, including corporate and government, with proven success records in challenging environments. We believe that the quality of our leaders is a real differentiator for Save the Children.

4.     There is insufficient budget to execute my great ideas.

We are always conscious about how we spend our money. If your idea is really great, then you will have considered this too. Save the Children is not an organisation stuck in the mud; we are constantly seeking innovative ways to streamline our processes, improve our programs and engage our supporters. We need your big ideas to take us to the next level!

5.     The not for profit sector is not competitive.

Not true. We want to be the leading international development agency. We are brave; our culture of creative innovation is pushing boundaries every day.

Our values drive everything we do. 

There are certain values and behaviours that drive all our work. They are integral to what we do and how we do it - so we look for them in everyone we work with.
