WHSmith and Save the Children join forces to re-write the story for Children across Australia.

This year, WHSmith Australia embarks on a long-term partnership with Save the Children.

Celebrating the Company’s 225th anniversary this year, and with a growing network of 100 stores around Australia, WHSmith is embarking on a new partnership with Save the Children to ensure that the most vulnerable and marginalised children in Australia have access to quality education. Funds raised through Save the Children’s collection tins within WHSmith stores across Australia will support all the child rights organisation’s work, including education work. Education has the power to transform children’s futures and Save the Children is determined to ensure that every child around the world gets a high quality education and the chance to fulfil their potential.

The IKEA Foundation calls on funders to step up and save lives in Yemen

The IKEA Foundation calls on funders to step up and save lives in Yemen

To enable Save the Children and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) to continue to save lives and protect children and families in Yemen, the IKEA Foundation has stepped forward to give a €500,000 grant to Save the Children and €2 million to Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF).

Yemen is on the verge of social, economic and institutional collapse as a merciless war continues to rage. People are struggling to survive. Since the escalation of the conflict in March 2015, over two million people have fled their homes, putting host communities under pressure and leading to insufficient food and inadequate access to basic medical care for many.

“The IKEA Foundation is proud to support MSF and Save the Children’s work in Yemen, and it’s why we’re encouraging other funders to do the same. The international community has not done enough to prevent children and families in Yemen from suffering. If we don’t act now, the consequences are unthinkable”, says Per Heggenes, CEO of the IKEA Foundation.

With the IKEA Foundation’s funding, Save the Children will focus on helping the most vulnerable children in Sana’a and Amran governorates. We will provide food baskets and help caregivers understand how best to nourish children under two. Mobile child-protection teams will be created, and support will be given to children who have become separated from their families. Save the Children will also provide psychosocial support to children and caregivers who have directly experienced violence. 

Grant Pritchard, Save the Children’s Deputy Country Director in Yemen, said: “Bombs are landing on homes, they are landing on schools, and they are landing on hospitals, resulting in the displacement of nearly 1 million children and the needless loss of nearly 1,500 innocent children’s lives while thousands more have been maimed since the conflict escalated. We are grateful for the support from the IKEA Foundation, which will do much to improve the lives of thousands of hungry, malnourished and vulnerable children. And I hope that other donors will follow the IKEA Foundation’s example, given the catastrophic humanitarian crisis we are witnessing on the ground.”

Yemen’s children are at the heart of one of the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. Save the Children estimates that 10 million children urgently need help. One Yemeni child dies every ten minutes from preventable killers like diarrhoea, malnutrition and respiratory tract infection. Over two million children are malnourished—and the number is rising.

The IKEA Foundation hopes that other funders will follow their example, to ensure that the people of Yemen get the help they need.

Marriott Spirit to Serve Day

As part of their annual ‪Spirit To Serve day, Marriott associates all around the globe took time out from their day jobs to support the Marriott core value to "Serve our World". This aims to strengthen the company by supporting the communities in which they are based and ensures Marriott employees feel they are part of a proud history and a thriving culture.

On the annual Spirit to Serve day, the team at Melbourne Marriott Hotel got their hands dirty by volunteering their time gardening and painting at Cubbies.

Learning essential job skills with Johnson & Johnson

Thanks to Johnson & Johnson's generous volunteers, young people from Claymore are learning essential job skills – that they'll use for their future career path.

For kids living in Claymore, New South Wales, where the unemployment rate is more than five times the national average, these essential job-seeking skills may be out of reach.

In July 2016, staff from Johnson & Johnson Australia volunteered their time and run a one-day workshop with the Claymore Youth Advisory Committee (YAC), a group of six young leaders living in Claymore.

Claymore J&J Volunteers The Johnson & Johnson volunteers worked both in groups and one-on-one with the participants, concentrating on interview skills and resume writing. Their aim was to give the young people valuable information that will help them as they start planning their careers.

"It was extremely beneficial as we were all given individual advice" said one participant. "I really appreciated the input and help from the Johnson & Johnson team."

Save the Children established the YAC in 2014, employing six young people aged between 14-17 who meet every week to discuss, plan and implement activities for young people in their community. The YAC have since become known as a group of young people that can add a youth presence and perspective to other community activities, meaning more young people are participating in community events and becoming empowered to create positive changes.

And for the volunteers from Johnson & Johnson, this is just the beginning. They're already planning more workshops to continue building the young people's skill sets, like Microsoft Office skill development.

Johnson & Johnson have been working with Save the Children internationally for more than 20 years to create brighter futures for children living in the world's toughest places.
