A gift in your Will gives power to the children of tomorrow

By including Save the Children in your Will, you help build them a better future

Gifts in Wills made by everyday Australians are reaching children in some of the remotest places - prioritising the most number, most in need – efficiently, and without discrimination, to create powerful, long-term change.

After providing for your loved ones, even a small percentage of the remainder of your estate ensures a legacy that supports every child’s right to good health, safety, education, and participation – our vision that’s inspired supporters for over 100 years.

Meet supporters like you

The reasons behind these gifts are as numerous as our supporters and the lives they lead. For some, it’s caring for children less fortunate than their own; for others it’s leaving the world in a better place or continuing the work of their lifetime. But they all believe in a better future for children.

The legacy of a friendship

Retired teacher Alison, was inspired by her friend Victoria - a teacher trainer for Save the Children in the 1990s. Reflecting on her own safe and happy childhood, Alison believes all children deserve to grow up secure, healthy, and educated:

‘Save the Children works for children in some of the toughest places to make this happen. By supporting Save I am helping these children - I’ve been a regular donor for over 15 years and intend to continue supporting throughout my life and later, through the gift in my Will"

The CEO’s perspective

I’m privileged to see our programs all around the world and I’m confident that money is put to good use wherever it’s being used. Because children face increasing challenges, I’m convinced that my gift, whenever it’s used, will still be needed.

Leaving a percentage of my estate, it’s value will increase, and I can still provide for my kids on equal terms. For my children it’ll be a reminder of what their dad stood for: the notions of charity and child rights that I see rubbing off on them today.

Sandra’s Caring Life

"As a retired midwife and neonatal nurse, I’ve always had an interest in child health and wellbeing. We are blessed with freedom; food; healthcare – such luxury. I think of children in camps – hungry, frozen and without hope, knowing the work of this organisation cannot be valued more highly.

The gift in my Will to Save the Children is an investment in the future of children less fortunate than mine as the gap between rich and poor grows ever wider." Sandra updated her Will with the full support of her daughters.

Dawn’s gift of empathy

As a child, Dawn was loved and cared for by her extended family when her parents couldn’t be there. Dawn knows first-hand how life-changing it can for a vulnerable child to receive the support they need.

Years later, after a career in health and child protection and having seen up close the wide-ranging harm impacting children, Dawn was inspired to leave a gift in her Will: ‘to Save the Children – the people who can make the best use of it to help children of the world reach their potential.’

Sabina’s personal values

"My mother and grandmother were my role models. They taught me about humanity and that family is more than just your immediate family. I wanted to pass these values on to my children. We discussed the gift in my Will to Save the Children as a family, and everybody agreed.

Your own family is most important, but there is also room for people worse off. It’s about the future and helping young people, because by helping them to grow up, to be educated, they have opportunities they otherwise wouldn’t have."

A Father’s Vision (Vijay)

Vijaykumar’s gift – which he hopes will help to transform children’s lives through education - stems from his Hindu upbringing and deep interest in serving humanity: ‘Ensuring the healthy development of children is important for our society’ he says.

Vijay believes that children are more vulnerable than adults to a range of disadvantages from poverty and food insecurity to poor health care and other challenges. And that by ensuing their safety, security and education, we help children grow up emotionally stable and confident to become effective citizens of the modern world.

Our Board Chair, Larry

"It’s our responsibility to do what we can to support a better world, according to our means. I would encourage everyone to think about the problems where their legacy can make a difference.

Having grandchildren helps me feel connected to the future, but it’s not a choice between family versus donations. I want a portion of my legacy to go to causes that I believe in deeply. I believe in the broader mission of Save the Children. I know that when the time comes, my gift will be used wisely."

Practical Will wording

Leaving a gift in your Will is easy. Use our suggested wording to help children like Sofia achieve the safety and equal opportunity she strives for in her homeland Peru.

If you’d like your legacy to include meaningful and life-changing support for children, the steps are very simple:

Start the conversation

If possible, have a conversation with your loved ones. We encourage you to provide for them first and to seek their full support for the gift in your Will to Save the Children.

Choose your gift type

Choose the type of gift that you would like to leave for the benefit of children. There are 3 options you can consider:

  • A ‘residuary gift’ is the whole or a percentage of the remainder of your estate once your other wishes have been carried out. (These gifts retain their value regardless of inflation).
  • A ‘specific gift’ is a fixed dollar amount.
  • A ‘specific asset’ is a possession or an item (eg. property or shares).
Suggested will wording

Now you’re ready to leave a gift in your Will to Save the Children, here is our suggested wording:

I give to Save the Children ABN 99 008 610 035, of Level 9/469 La Trobe Street, Melbourne Victoria 3000 a gift of (insert your choice of a specific sum or percent share of your residuary estate) for its general purposes.

Ayen, 16, holds her baby sister Nyajuba outside their home in South Sudan

Gifts in Wills are giving power to the children of tomorrow

16-year-old Ayen has lived through successive floods in South Sudan. With crops destroyed and homes swept away, families have been left with nothing. Ayen’s baby sister faced life-threatening hunger.

Save the Children was there to help.

Nyajuba received lifesaving medical care and ‘plumpy nut’. Ayen had a safe place to go to play and be supported to continue her education - learning about the hazards of child marriage and strengthening her determination to be a doctor.
