Bushfire emergency

Help kids recover from the harrowing effects of this crisis.

Help children cope and recover from devastating bushfires

Thousands of children caught up in these fires have been confronted by a real fear for their life and future. Your donation will help give them the support they need to feel safe, cope and recover.

This Appeal Page can only accept donations from Australian addresses.
If you live outside Australia, please donate via our global donation page.

We know that children are most vulnerable during times of disaster. The bushfires that raged across parts of Australia, spreading terror before them and leaving devastation behind, created a crisis on an unprecedented scale.

The traumatic effect on the thousands of children caught up in these fires cannot be underestimated.

While the fires raged, Save the Children helped children cope by giving them a safe place to draw, play and socialise in our Child Friendly Spaces. Most importantly, they could start to process their experiences in a safe and supported environment.

But the impact on children did not simply go away when the fires went out.

Tens of thousands of children have been affected by the bushfires. Experiencing a disaster of this scale can have a harrowing long-term impact on children’s emotional wellbeing - especially if they are not provided with the right support to process what they’ve been through.

Your donation will help to implement a support program to help children who have lived through the fear and distress of the bushfires to feel safe again.

The program, called Journey of Hope, is implemented by specially trained support workers through schools and early childhood centres. It is designed to help children understand, process and express their feelings and emotions in order to help them recover.

The program works through schools and helps children develop coping skills through structured games, stories and creative play in safe, small groups. It helps them identify emotions and understand that it’s normal to feel angry, sad or frustrated during scary or difficult situations. The model has been well researched and found to increase resilience, reduce psychological stress and increase coping skills amongst affected children.

The Journey of Hope program can also help children recover from the compounding impact of the COVID-19 health crisis, that has followed so closely behind the fires. The program can help children gain the skills and resilience they need to bounce back from these disasters, and the next, whatever that may be.

With your support we can help to reduce the distress children are suffering and assist their families and communities to recover from what they have experienced.
