Climate Crisis Australia

Climate change is having a significant impact on Australia now and in the future. Learn what we are doing to combat the climate crisis & donate today.

Being in the midst of a climate crisis in Australia, we all must do our part. By anticipating change and making plans to adapt to it including anticipating and preparing for more natural disasters, we can help to minimise the impact of climate change. Below is info on climate change in Australia - how climate change is affecting Australia, how long climate change has been an issue in Australia and what Australia can do to stop climate change.

Save The Children has been championing children’s rights for over 100 years. We provide emergency response support when children and their families have been affected by crises and programs that focus on providing children with the best start in life so they can thrive and reach their full potential. With the impacts of climate change increasing, here is info on the climate crisis in Australia and what we are doing to help address climate change.

How Is Climate Change Affecting Australia?

The whole planet is affected by climate change, but for us, how is climate change affecting Australia and how long has climate change been an issue in Australia?

Global warming has been occurring since the middle of the 20th century but here in Australia research shows that average temperatures have continued to increase over the last 60 years. Changes to the Australian climate system have and will increasingly result in:

  • Rising temperatures result in hotter days and more of them
  • Rising sea levels
  • Oceans becoming more acidic
  • Declining snow depths
  • Extreme rainfall events increasing in intensity and frequency
  • More droughts
  • Harsher fire-weather

These changes can cause multiple issues in our countries such as more natural disasters occurring, adversely impacting many industries including agriculture & tourism and ultimately impacting our quality of life and the way we live.

What Can Australia Do To Stop Climate Change?

Climate change affects all of us, so what can Australia do to stop climate change?

Building awareness, educating and creating opportunities to plan and prepare can help with disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation. We firmly believe that children can play a valuable part in addressing climate change. This is their future and through our programs, we ensure children have a voice when it comes to climate change.

We listen to what children have to say about how climate change impacts them and the experience from their perspective. We work together to come up with solutions and create adaptation plans that factor in the needs and experiences of children.
