Donating Clothes to Charity

Learn how donating clothes to charity can support our aid programs in Australia and internationally.

Donating clothes to charity is a great way to keep your old clothes out of a landfill and do your part to help the environment. But, importantly, donating second-hand clothes helps to enable a charity to do the good work it does - all the proceeds from our op shops go towards helping to fund our programs and emergency response aid. But before you give clothes to charity we have a few tips below on how best to donate second-hand clothes.

For over 100 years we have been championing children’s rights working towards reaching as many children as we can so they can not only survive, but thrive - with a bright future ahead of them. Every year we help millions of children and their families in 117 countries across the globe, working hard to ensure every child lives, learns and is safe from harm. We do this through our evidence-based programs that focus on the health & well-being of children and emergency relief support when disasters strike. Here are our tips on donating second-hand clothes and how you can give clothes to charity.

Tips for donating second-hand clothes to a charity

If you are donating second-hand clothes in person to one of our op shops, here are some things to consider:
  • Make sure items are clean and washed
  • Check pockets to make sure you haven't left anything in them that you don't want to be giving away
  • If good quality items have zips or buttons missing, fix them before donating the second-hand clothes
The other option is to arrange collection with UPPAREL which focuses on reusing, repurposing and recycling - aimed at reducing the shocking amount of clothing that ends up in landfill each year. We have partnered with UPPAREL to make it easier for you to give clothes to charity, but in a way that is much better for the environment.

Now when donating second-hand clothes, it doesn't matter if the items you have to donate are no longer wearable. UPPAREL will collect your items, assess them, and then sort them into three categories - reuse, recycle, and repurpose. Reusable items will go to our op shops where we can sell them and put profits of sales into our programs.

Give clothes to charity today

We have charity stores located throughout Australia. To give clothes to a charity near you, visit our Op Shop page to see a list of all locations or arrange a collection through UPPAREL.

In addition to donating second-hand clothes, one of the best ways to support the work we’re doing to help millions of children around the world is to donate. You can make a single donation today or become a monthly giver. Over 80% of your donation goes directly towards program expenditure and donations over $2 are also tax deductible.
