Clean, safe drinking water is essential for survival. Without clean water and sanitation facilities, in particular in emergencies such as disasters, the spread of disease is a real threat, especially for children. As a water and sanitation charity, we have teams that can respond quickly when an emergency happens, to ensure children and their families have the life-saving essentials they need to survive and thrive, regardless of where they are. Below is more about the work we do as a water and sanitation charity to help save children’s lives.
For over 100 years we have been championing children’s rights. We believe every child deserves a bright future and our vision is a world in which every child lives, learns and is safe from harm. When a crisis occurs, we’re often the first to arrive to provide life-saving essentials when they’re needed most and the last to leave - ensuring children are kept safe and have the support they need to recover. We run programs around the world, working in partnership with local communities, government, other NGOs, community & advocacy groups, corporate partners and individual donors to create change for children, families and their communities. As one of the clean water and sanitation charities in Australia, here is more about the work we do to protect children and their families from the spread of preventable diseases:
The Work We Do As A Water And Sanitation Charity
When a disaster strikes, immediate relief is crucial. Clean water and sanitation charities act quickly to provide clean water and sanitation facilities to help prevent the spread of deadly diseases. We have specially trained teams that can act within 72 hours of a disaster occurring to provide life-saving supplies when they’re needed most, with the capacity to stay on to help children stay safe and help them and their families recover in the longer term.
As an
emergency relief & sanitation charity, some of the immediate and long-term aid our teams provide includes:
- Providing safe, clean drinking water to families and communities
- Distributing food and warm clothing to children and their families
- Helping to repair water supplies
- Distributing sanitation kits
- Providing healthcare such as emergency operations, treatment for killer diseases such as cholera and malaria, and vital vaccinations
- Providing food and helping severely malnourished children get back to a safe weight
- Helping to reunite children who have been separated from their families
- Setting up temporary shelters
- Setting up safe spaces for children so they have somewhere to play, learn and get emotional support to help them cope with what they've been through
Our Work in Yemen
Currently, one of the countries that require urgent assistance from clean water and sanitation charities is Yemen. Yemen is experiencing one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises with an estimated two-thirds of the population needing some form of humanitarian assistance.
When approximately 14 million people urgently needed access to safe drinking water and sanitation to stop the spread of cholera and other diseases our teams constructed large water access points and rebuilt public rainwater harvesting systems & small water points that had been destroyed during the conflict.
We continue to provide support to children and their families in Yemen wherever possible, but we need your help.
