Urgent help is needed for the Horn of Africa hunger crisis. With an unprecedented fourth consecutive failed rainy season fears are mounting that the region is heading into the worst drought in decades. Furthermore, the escalation of the war in Ukraine has dramatically increased food prices whilst also diverting attention away from the Horn of Africa hunger crisis so we’re seeing huge shortfalls in funding. Below is how you can donate to the Horn of Africa and support our teams that are there working hard to help as many children and their families who are suffering from hunger & malnutrition.
Save The Children was the first child rights organisation in Australia and has been helping children in need for over 100 years. We help millions of children and their families in over 117 countries. We believe every child deserves a bright future and our vision is a world in which every child lives, learns and is safe from harm. The work we do focuses on health, education and protection for children and providing life-saving aid in emergencies. Here is what is happening with the Horn of Africa hunger crisis, what we are doing about it and how you can help:
The horn of Africa starvation crisis
Ongoing conflict, political instability, the impacts of climate change along with rising costs of food prices & supplies has resulted in acute food shortages across the Horn Of Africa with millions of people facing critical levels of hunger. Farmers are struggling to regenerate pastures, replenish water supplies and restore livestock herds with many being forced from their homes to go in search of food & water and to find other livelihoods.
When a crisis occurs, we know that children are the most vulnerable and this is certainly the case with the Horn of Africa starvation crisis. One of the most concerning factors when it comes to children in Africa is malnutrition, which is currently one of the biggest risks for children under 5. Children that suffer from malnutrition are also more susceptible to catching infections (which they also struggle to recover from) and are at a much higher risk of dying.
What we are doing about the horn of Africa hunger crisis
We have been working in the Horn of Africa for over 70 years providing life-saving healthcare and treatment to children and their families affected by the crisis. In 2021, We reached 12,185,726 people in Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia including more than 7,624,620 children.
Some of the work we’re doing to address the Horn of Africa hunger crisis includes:
-
Set up and ongoing operation of an Emergency Health Unit that supports treatment centres by training staff, providing life-saving supplies & health provisions and screening children for malnutrition
-
Set up rehydration posts in some of the worst-affected areas
-
Providing health and nutrition services to people living in remote communities
-
Implementing resilience programs to address the long-term impacts of climate change
-
Supporting the establishment and training of community-based disaster management committees
-
Supporting unemployed young ‘pastoralist drop-outs’ who were forced by the current circumstances to give up the cattle farmer trade
-
Supporting women-led loans and savings groups, so families can start small-scale businesses, run sustainable kitchen gardens, and raise livestock appropriate for drought-conditions
