Starvation in Africa

An estimated 1.4 million children are at risk of starvation in Africa but with your support we can provide life-saving aid.

Starvation in Africa is at critical levels with over 1.4 million children in Africa at risk of starvation. The COVID-19 pandemic made an already dire situation worse as access to vital medical supplies and food had been hampered so help is needed more, now than ever.

For over 100 years Save The Children has been championing the rights of children. Our vision is a world in which every child lives, learns and is safe from harm. We run evidence-based programs in Australia and around the world focusing on the health & well-being of children and when disaster strikes we are amongst the first to be there delivering life-saving aid. We’re also the last to leave, ensuring children are kept safe and they and their families have the best chance of recovery. We have been working hard to help save children in Africa - here is more about the work we are doing to address starvation in Africa and how you can help by donating to Africa's starvation crisis.

What we are doing to help children suffering from starvation in Africa

Our teams have been working hard to help children and their families impacted by starvation in Africa since 1963. Some of the work we’re doing includes:
  • Providing food to children and their families in as many places as possible, including remote hard to reach locations
  • Supporting treatment centres for children suffering from malnutrition by training staff and providing life-saving supplies
  • Setting up rehydration posts in some of the worst-affected areas
  • Setting up Emergency Health Units so we can screen children for malnutrition and provide life-saving healthcare, treatment and nutrition services to children who desperately need it

In addition to providing immediate life-saving aid, we’re also working with Government at all levels, other organisations and communities to help reduce the underlying causes of poverty, improving food security and access to basic health services.

We are doing everything that we can. But we need your help. Children and their families at risk of starvation in Africa need your help.
