Our work in Australia

Save the Children has been advocating for children's rights in Australia for over 100 years. Now providing services under the name 54 reasons, we ensure all children and young people understand and exercise their rights, fostering a thriving, diverse, and creative community. We provide local services across every state and territory, employing over 600 dedicated professionals.

Example initiatives from a few of the areas we’re helping Australians today:

Strengthening families

We support women and children escaping domestic and family violence through safe accommodation, transitional housing, and community outreach services. Our refuges, located in confidential settings, provide a warm and welcoming environment for families in crisis. We also offer emotional and practical support, including housing assistance, parenting support, and legal aid.

Strong communities

Through programs like It Takes a Village, we support migrant and refugee families by offering culturally appropriate playgroups, life skills classes, and casework services. These programs help children transition into school with confidence and build supportive community networks.

Children and learning

Our practical school-based program Hands on Learning supports the social and emotional development of young people, helping them discover their talents through practical learning projects. The program is operational in over 130 schools across Australia and has been named as one of the top 100 global most inspiring education innovations by the Finnish education non-profit HundrED.

International Programs

As well as our domestic programs and the more than 100 countries Save the Children provides aid to globally, Save the Children Australia operates in 21 countries, implementing programs that focus on health, education, and child protection. Our efforts are geared towards achieving three bold goals: ensuring no child dies from preventable causes, all children receive a quality basic education, and violence against children is no longer tolerated.

This can include anything from facilitating improved access to healthcare for mothers and children in Ethiopia, to supporting children and communities in Bangladesh, to adapt to climate change impacts through education and local projects.
