Volunteer Stories

Save the Children knows just how important volunteers are. Without their support, we couldn't continue to protect and support children.

Our Volunteers

We are proud to have incredible and committed volunteers who all play a vital in role in helping to us save children's lives.

We have more than 2,850+ amazing volunteers around Australia. Our 57 op shops are staffed entirely by volunteers. We also have volunteers in our offices, our programs and at our events. Here are some of their stories!

Victoria Allison

It was volunteering in our African Reading Club, and helping children with their homework, that sparked Victoria's interest in completing an internship with us. As an intern, Victoria organised a sausage sizzle at the Children's Book Festival to raise funds for the African Reading Club. The sausage sizzle was a great success and raised thousands of dollars to provide iPads for kids to use in our programs.

Poppy Francis

Poppy was studying hard for her exams when she took a break and saw a post about Save the Children's No Child Left Behind campaign on the 7-Eleven Facebook page. The 17-year-old was so inspired by our work that she decided she wanted to volunteer with us.

We loved Poppy's enthusiasm and welcomed her down at Federation Square in Melbourne, where she spent an afternoon taking the public through our school installation, which included a mock-up of a classroom.

"I am saddened to hear some children physically can't get to school because of certain barriers. That's why I wanted to help Save the Children. I believe everyone should access education," says Poppy.

Bianca Le

After completing her university degree, Bianca wanted to spend some time volunteering for an organisation whose values and focus matched her interests and values.

Bianca approached Save the Children and began as an intern with our Banking Team. Bianca says she's enjoyed being an intern. "I am learning things that I can apply to my degree. I am learning how to work in a team, getting new skills and contributing. The three words that I would use to describe the Save the Children are: educative, professional and welcoming."

Ris Grosvenor

Ris Grosvenor

Ris has lived in Victor Harbor, South Australia, for more than 60 years. She can comment firsthand on the development and changes in the town over the past six decades.

Ris has been volunteering in Save the Children's op shop in Victor Harbor for 10 years. She has made some special friends there and proudly tells us that she doesn't need to use a calculator to add up the daily takings!
