Save the Children commemorates NAIDOC Week 2018: Because of her, we can!

Save the Children is proud to celebrate NAIDOC Week 2018 and recognise the invaluable ongoing contribution Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have made to Australian families and communities across generations.
05 July 2018
Themed Because of her, we can! NAIDOC Week 2018 will be held nationally from Sunday 8 July through to Sunday 15 July.

Save the Children Australia has been working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families for over 65 years. Last year, over half of our funded programming work occurred right here in Australia – in places like Mooroopna, Victoria and the East Kimberley in Western Australia.

We work with children, families and communities to provide the extra support they might need to get the best start in life; in education, child protection and family support.
None of our work would be possible without the foundation of our strong Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander workforce. Currently 26 per cent of our Australian Services staff identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. In some locations, this reaches over 90 per cent.

Save the Children CEO Paul Ronalds recognises that while significant progress has been made over our history, we still have more to do as an organisation.

“As a non-Indigenous organisation, Save the Children knows there are significant gains to be made by working in genuine collaboration with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We work hard to put that principle into practice through our employment practices, program design and implementation, as well as our public advocacy work.

“Save the Children proudly works side-by-side with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and organisations across Australia. We invest in capacity development to support the effective transition of service delivery from non-Indigenous organisations to Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations.

“This NAIDOC week, we celebrate the central role Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women play as leaders and influencers within their families, communities, and within our organisation,” Mr Ronalds said.

Save the Children Australia is on track to ensuring over 35 per cent of our workforce identifies as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander by June next year, in line with our Reconciliation Action Plan targets.
