Save the Children welcomes the Australian Government’s endorsement of the Safe Schools Declaration, an internationally recognised commitment to protect students, teachers, schools, and universities from the worst impacts of armed conflict.

Save the Children Australia CEO Mat Tinker said:

“Every child should have the right to receive an education without fear of violence or attack, and the Australian Government's decision to endorse the Safe Schools Declaration signals its commitment to that upholding right.

“117 countries are now a part of the Safe Schools declaration, with Australia’s recent endorsement sending a positive signal to other nations in our region to follow suit. Schools should always be a safe haven – never a target on the battlefield.”

"Save the Children, along with other organisations, have been calling for Australia to endorse the declaration since it was launched in 2015. We're extremely pleased that the government has finally taken it up."
