Cubbies is more than an adventure playground – it’s a community hub for families to connect, grow and learn together.

Supporting families in inner-city Melbourne

Children living in public housing do not have access to their own ‘backyard’, or safe play space in the community. We know children and young people have a greater chance of reaching their potential when they have opportunities to engage in stimulating and safe environments, experiences and relationships that support their development.

Cubbies is a community hub in the heart of Fitzroy and one of the few Adventure Playgrounds remaining in Australia. Originally established in 1974, based on Junkyard playgrounds of Europe in the 1940s it has since evolved into a vibrant safe community space for children to engage in creative and recreational play and activities that encourage calculated risk taking and decision making.
Located directly next to the Atherton Gardens, on the traditional lands of the Wurundjeri people, Save the Children’s Cubbies program delivers programs to children and families from the nearby estate and welcomes participants from the surrounding neighbourhoods.
Cubbies provides a safe, creative and fun play environment for the children and a connected, supportive environment for parents and carers, supporting them to build their resilience, develop positive relationships and increase their social and emotional learning. Through targeted activities and adventurous play, our skilled Youth Workers, Bi-Cultural staff, University and Community Volunteers support children to increase their engagement and participation with their community, build their sense of self and cultural pride, whilst improving inter-cultural relations, social cohesion and community harmony.

How we know we’re making a difference

We have an average of 340 participants a week, including 190 children in Cubbies, with 95 per cent of those identifying as Culturally or Linguistically Diverse. 70 per cent of our activities are child-led; empowering children to have a voice in their space. Participants tell us that they feel valued and genuinely heard due to their ideas regularly being implemented.
Providing these opportunities to attendees at Cubbies provides children with a sense of agency over the space, and pride in their ability to co-design the environment.
