For pregnant women and mothers with babies or infants, having a safe and supportive environment can make a tremendous difference to their long term health and wellbeing. Below, find out about the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander housing services we provide for women and their young children who are facing challenges.
Save The Children has been helping vulnerable children around the world for over 100 years. We provide emergency response support and deliver programs aimed at protecting and nurturing children in over 117 countries. We help millions of children and are dedicated to our vision of a world in which every child attains the right to survival, protection, development and participation.
Here is how we help expectant Aboriginal women and mothers of young children through our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander housing programs.
Our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander housing programs
Limited or no access to support services and unsafe environments in those critical first few years can have long lasting negative health & wellbeing impacts on both mothers and children. Early intervention is one of the most effective ways we can help to make positive change.
Our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander housing programs provide safe and comfortable accommodation for Aboriginal families experiencing intersecting disadvantages (e.g. domestic & family violence, child neglect, financial vulnerability, health conditions and homelessness).
Through our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander housing service we provide women with practical support for every day tasks (such as cooking & cleaning) and positive parenting along with providing information and help to gain access to support services.
We help to ensure families have safe and secure housing upon exiting the program and also address money issues. We help mothers to gain the skills and knowledge that enable them to:
- Develop new life skills to improve health, wellbeing, and financial security
- Continue to be connected to support services and community
- Be aware of the importance of early childhood development
- Gain confidence when it comes to caring for and supporting their children
- Make better life decisions to build a stronger future for themselves and their children
- Help protect themselves
