Domestic violence is a pervasive issue. In Australia and globally, the domestic violence statistics are alarming, with women and children being the most at risk. Save the Children Australia is committed to protecting children from violence, both domestically and internationally. Our mission is to ensure that by 2030, violence against the most vulnerable children in the world is not tolerated.

We firmly believe that every child is entitled to a promising future. Our mission is to create a world where every child can live, learn, and be safe from harm. For over a century, Save the Children has been a vanguard for children’s rights, implementing evidence-based, child-centric programs and providing life-saving aid during emergencies. We venture into the harshest environments to protect children from earthquakes, cyclones, conflict, and disease. Where children are exploited, neglected, or abused, we step in to shield them from harm. As an organisation committed to combating domestic violence, we are dedicated to assisting with domestic abuse. Given the alarming domestic violence statistics, we are committed to ensuring the safety of children and women. Here is how we are preventing domestic abuse, thanks to the generous donations we receive:
What we do as a charity for domestic violence
The UNCRC (UN Convention on the Rights of the Child) outlines the fundamental rights of children, with Article 19 stating that children must be protected from all forms of violence, abuse, neglect, and exploitation. In line with this, Save the Children Australia has been working tirelessly to protect children from violence. In 2021, we directly reached 3.1 million children through our global protection programs.
As a charity for domestic violence, our mission is to protect the most vulnerable children in the world from violence and ensure it isn't tolerated globally by 2030. When looking at domestic violence rates by country, Cambodia and Laos have some of the highest domestic violence statistics which is why we have teams based in both countries helping with domestic abuse.
Impact of our programs on Cambodia
Cambodia is a great example of the success we’ve seen with our global programs. We have been in Cambodia since 2013 working on child protection with a focus to end all forms of violence against children. Some of the work we’re doing to support this mission includes:
- Building supportive community environments and strengthening community-based child protection systems
- Working with local and national governments to bring in a long-term policy change that helps keep girls and boys safe from all forms of violence, strengthen the systems that prevent violence & respond when children do experience violence
- Running our Strengthening Child Protection program that works with children, families & communities in Cambodia to improve positive parenting approaches and to provide better social work support to families so they can seek out help when they need it
As a result of our work to help with domestic abuse, the Cambodian Government has prioritised family-based care and is committed to reducing violence against children through reform to child protection systems. The Government is also investing in more Community Social Workers and Village Volunteers. We are also seeing positive changes at the parent & caregiver levels as well.
Our work in Australia
Domestically, in Australia, one of our initiatives to help with domestic abuse is our Domestic and Family Violence Refuges where we provide a safe place for women and children to go to who are fleeing domestic & family violence. Through these refuges (which are based in confidential locations throughout Queensland) we also provide specialised support services and housing assistance.
