UNCRC Article 11: protection from kidnapping

Stand with Save the Children Australia in enforcing UNCRC Article 11 to combat child kidnapping and ensure a safer world for children.

Childhood should be synonymous with safety and joy, yet the grim reality of people and events that disrupt the safety of children is sadly still a common occurrence, this is where the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) Article 11 steps in. Among the many threats to a happy childhood is the sinister act of kidnapping, UNCRC Article 11 specifically addresses this infringement on children’s rights, continue reading to learn more about how you can help protect children around the world.

Understanding UNCRC Article 11 and its global impact

UNCRC Article 11 obligates state parties to take measures to combat the illicit transfer and non-return of children abroad. This article addresses not only the issue of kidnapping but also the complexities of international child abduction cases, often tangled in cross-border custody disputes.

Following the UNCRC, The United Nations fosters international treaties and agreements, such as the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction. These agreements provide a legal framework for the swift return of abducted children and ensure that custody disputes are resolved in the child's habitual residence country, rather than where the child has been taken.

The UN conducts global awareness campaigns to educate governments, communities, and individuals about the risks of child kidnapping and the importance of protecting children’s rights. As well as this, the UN collaborates with various non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and child welfare organisations, including Save the Children, to implement programs and initiatives aimed at protecting children from kidnapping.

How we’re championing child safety

The fight against child abduction begins at the grassroots. Community awareness, vigilance, and education are the pillars of prevention. Save the Children Australia fosters informed communities and encourages governments to protect the children in their nation.

As well as general advocacy and awareness building, Save the Children Australia has specific initiatives in place to help children who need it most. In Cambodia, where around half of all children experience some form of violence, our programs are dedicated to building robust child protection systems and ending violence against children through empowering family groups and increasing the government’s focus on this very real issue.

Children in Laos similarly face violence on a horrifically frequent basis. In addition to educating their families on these issues, Save the Children establishes district and provincial committees that receive training on child rights and positive discipline. These committees also work to strengthen child rights within the legal system.

In Indonesia, our Families First program promotes a paradigm shift from institutional to family and community care. This not only resonates with UNCRC Article 11's spirit but also helps build a safer, more nurturing environment for children.

How you can help in the battle against kidnapping

Education and advocacy are our best weapons against child abduction. By raising awareness about risks and protective measures, together we can foster safer environments and fortify legal frameworks to shield children from kidnapping.
